Word from the Mouth: Fall Season is Underway! edition

Here we are back at it for another season. What a wonderful time to start a new season. We get to play on Saturday and then, if you're lucky, you can watch a little college football Saturday night or afternoon then Sundays comes around and we get to watch the NFL while we rest up and start looking towards next week when we can go out and live out our dreams.

rn

I'm sure at this point we can all be glad to see New England lose (ed's note: reverse spoiler alert!), I'm sure that they have lost most of their fan base since Brady is gone. Now we have to deal with all the Tampa Bay fans who allegedly have been fans of theirs for years.

rn

I'm glad that the MFL has a ton of teams this season and I see that most of the teams are going to be decent and mostly competitive.

Week 1 Recap - Division 2

rn

rn

Outlaws vs Bitter Boys (49-32)

rn

I didn't see this game and I didn't play in it like I was supposed to, but what I know is that Steve had as many TD passes as he did incompletions with 6. I spoke to a few of the Outlaws after the game and they all seemed to say the same thing, Bitter Boys defense was all over the place and it was easy to pick them apart. On offense Bitter Boys were able to move the ball and with the weapons they have won't have a problem putting the ball in the end zone. The best thing about seeing Bitter Boys this fall season was they went back to last season's roster. Mario is back and it was nice to see Pat back after last year's injury, hope he is doing well and back at 100%. It is too bad for JS that he doesn't have Kevin back to pair up with Guillaume Robert, because that would be a deadly combination.

rn

D#Nasty vs OG Panthers (32-30)

rn

This looked like it was going to be a blow out for OG Panthers. OG were able to score on their opening drive then Kemba picked it off and strolled into the end zone for 6. Next drive Terry gets a safety to make it 16-0 early in the game. Kemba had a second pick which he took to the house before it was called back for flags being the wrong way, but it looked like nothing could go wrong for them as it took them only two plays to get those points back on the board. With 2 minutes left it was 24-0 for OG Panthers then we get to half time with it being 30-14 both teams scored on big play after big play. It looked as if it took D#Nasty some time to wake up and get going. Second half they started with the ball and scored, then both teams seemed to settle in and no one was able to do much until D#Nasty scored with a few minutes left making it a 1 score game. OG Panthers were able to march down the field and get into scoring range with under a minute left, but they stalled and faced a fourth down. Terry knowing the rules decided to take the a delay of game to waste more time off the clock that was until the scorekeeper let the defense know they could stop the clock with the penalty. OG didn't convert and left D#Nasty 12 seconds left. They gained a first down and on what was the last play of the game Kevin threw it up and hoped for a miracle and he got it in the form of Sébastien who went up with a slew of defenders around and came down with it in the end zone and just like that OG Panthers blew a 24 point lead and didn't manage a single point in the second half.

rn

rn

Outlaws vs Jason Rossie Team (32-18)

rn

With a new team like the Jason Rossie Team you would expect to see Outlaws walk all over them. Then you have to look at who they had playing for them, Svetna, Kris was out subbing, and Will Powers. Those players alone have tons of experience and are also pretty good as well. Oh, and I forgot to mention that Jason is a very good QB. Outlaws had a 13 point lead at half then the second half started and it was back and forth from then on. After the game we spoke about it and we all said that it was much tougher than we expected it to be. The one thing that I noticed was that Kris who was subbing was calling the defense for the Jason Rossie team and they played a bunch of man defense. You can't be doing that to Steve as he will make you pay by finding the mismatch and exploiting it all game long.

rn

rn

Old School vs Honor Game (18-34)

rn

This was a really hard game for Old School. They have a really solid team and tons of chemistry but lets me tell you that other than Dahic and Nick everyone else is just a role player. If they want to win both guys need to play their ass off each week. Honor Game have a great roster and if they can maintain their composure, they should be able to win a bunch of games this season. With the 3 brothers on the squad there will of course be some arguing, but this week two of them were getting a little upset about things and Dilan (who from what I have heard is normally the one to lose it) kept both of his brothers in check and kept them calm. Anyone who knows them and is reading this is having a good laugh right now. Marvin who is the most upbeat guy I know not only helped get everyone to focus on the next play and not the one that just happened, and he looked unstoppable. Marvin went off for 3 TDs and had a pick on defense. If Honor Game plays like this all season we might be seeing them in the playoffs this season.

Top Performances of the Week

rn

rn

This season I will be picking a player of the week where the winner will be getting a bottle of alcohol. This is sponsored by Les Spiritueux Iberville. You can follow them on Facebook @spiritueuxiberville and on Insta @spiritueuxiberville

rn

Great alcohol with a great taste by one of MFL's own, Mario D'Amico.

rn

rn

This week I will be doing like in the spring and picking 3 players from each division and then depending on how many bottles I am given, I will select one winner from the league and if I get enough I will pick 1 winner per division. If you want the bottle there are a few things you must do in order to win. First and foremost, your team must win their game or games (ed's note: unfair!) and you must ball out and look good doing it. I also forgot to mention that if you play in multiple divisions, you can only win it in the division you fit best into. Oh, and if you start throwing it out there that you should be player of the week the likelihood of you winning is slim. Now let's see who is in this week's contention.

rn

rn

Division 2

rn

#1- Sébastien Béchard 4 catches for 66 yards, 3 TDs (1 on last play of game for the win), 1 2point convert and 2 tackles on defense.

rn

#2- Marvin Steinberg 4 catches for 79 yards, 3 TDs, 1 2pont convert, 4 tackles and a pick on defense.

rn

#3- Kevin Smuda (2 games played) 10 catches for 140 yards, 5 TDs, 2 1point convert, 2 2point converts, 3 tackles and a pick 6 on defense.

rn

rn

Division 3

rn

#1- Brian Mustard 25 of 32 for 224 yards, 7 TDs, 1 pick thrown and 3 1point converts.

rn

#2- Simon Valiquette 19 of 29 for 211 yards, 5 TDs, 1 pick thrown, 2 1point converts and 7 tackles on defense.

rn

#3- Jason Edwards 5 catches for 69nyards, 3 TDs and a pick on defense.

rn

rn

Division 4

rn

#1- Yannick Brisebois 11 catches for 99 yards, 3 TDs and 2 1point converts.

rn

#2- Andrew Treffeison 13 of 17 for 137 yards, 3TDs, 2 1point converts, 2 catches for 10 yards, 2 runs for 2 yards, 1 tackle and a pick on defense.

rn

#3- Terry Babalis 30 of 44 for 244 yards, 5 TDs, 2 picks thrown, 1 1point convert and 2 runs for 9 yards.

rn

rn

Those are Week 1's top performers. Now we wait until Saturday and see who is the ultimate winner of a bottle from Mario and Les Spiritueux Iberville.

rn

rn

Final Thoughts

rn

rn

We have made it through week 1 and only 9 weeks left in the season and playoffs. This season the divisions are much larger than they normally are and with only 4 team making it to the playoffs in each one, all the games will matter. I know it's early to be thinking about that, but keep it in the back of your mind.

rn

The NFL kicked off and there were two great things about this week. Tampa Bay losing and the Cowboys losing because they would kick a field goal on fourth down. Cam looks to be back and fully healthy, so all the Patriot fans that left for Tampa are probably sneaking their way back. You could tell that some teams needed the preseason and others didn't. All off season everyone was talking about how Arron Rodgers was no longer a top QB in the league and with last season being a down year since they began running the ball, but now they are thinking he is back. It's not like he ever left, he just seems more motivated to get back to the top.

rn

It's great to be playing this game that we all love, so just go out, have fun, and stay safe.
